Cornwall

Cornwall is the fastest growing municipality in Prince Edward Island, and one of the fastest growing in Canada. Located to the west of Charlottetown, the Mi’kmaq called this area Weli-mkumi, meaning “Good Ice” (for spearing eels). The area was settled by European immigrants in the late 18th century.

In 1995, the communities of Cornwall, Eliot River, and North River amalgamated to form the Town of Cornwall. The current population of the town is 6,574, an increase of 22.9% since 2016.

I took the opportunity to explore Cornwall last week, and this is what I found:

1. Selfie with the town's welcome sign: I took a picture with the town’s sign on Route 27. There is also a town sign off the busy Route 1 heading from Charlottetown, but I didn't feel like risking my life for that shot.

2. Visitor's Centre: There are no Visitors Centres in Cornwall, but you can find one in nearby Charlottetown. The Cornwall Town Hall has lots of information on the Town of you're curious.

3. Museum or heritage centre: Cornwall does not have a museum, although a helpful fellow at the Town Hall was able to provide me some information on the town’s history.

4. Public space: Cornwall has an impressive amount of recreational facilities. I took a stroll on some trails surrounding the Terry Fox Sports Complex off Main Street. There you will also find a climbing course, disc golf course, football and soccer turf fields as well as a beautiful playground.

5. Local restaurant: I stopped into the iconic Kozy Korner Restauant where I enjoyed a Falafel Platter.

6. Locally produced spirit: Cornwall is home to one of PEI's newest nano-breweries, Village Green Brewery. I stopped in to pick up a Cream Ale and a Spruce Honey Saison. Delicious!

7. Art in public places: While Cornwall is full of recreation facilities, it's a bit light on public art. I did find a funky sculpture in front of the Village Green Brewery though.

8. Town swag: I happened to be in Cornwall during office hours, so I popped into the Cornwall Town Hall where I acquired a Cornwall pin.

A little bit of trivia: Canada's largest pinball arcade will be opening soon in Cornwall. Seven's Pinballorama will feature over 40 pinball machines from the 1930s through to the 1990s.
